Built for businesses, freight forwarders, and individuals who need quick, reliable shipping estimates across , sea freight (FCL/LCL)road transport.
What Does This Freight Calculator Do?
Shipping costs depend on more than just the weight of your cargo. Carriers calculate charges based on either actual weight or volumetric weight—whichever is greater. This is called the , and understanding it can save you from unexpected shipping bills.
Our freight calculator provides:
- Volumetric weight calculation – Based on package dimensions using industry-standard DIM factors (6000 for air, 1000 for sea LCL, 3000 for road)
- Chargeable weight comparison – Instantly see whether you'll pay for actual or dimensional weight
- Multi-package support – Add multiple packages for consolidated shipment calculations
- Estimated cost in AED – Get approximate shipping costs based on current UAE market rates
This tool uses the same formulas applied by major carriers like DHL, FedEx, Emirates SkyCargo, and shipping lines operating through Dubai's Jebel Ali Port. For precise carrier-specific quotes, you can also try our DHL rate estimator or FedEx shipping calculator.

How Freight Cost Calculation Works
Freight carriers face a practical challenge: a shipment of cotton takes up far more space than a shipment of steel, even if both weigh the same. To account for this, the industry developed dimensional weight (also called volumetric weight) as a pricing mechanism.
The Calculation Method
The process involves three steps:
Step 1: Calculate the Volumetric Weight
Measure your package dimensions in centimeters (Length × Width × Height), then divide by the appropriate DIM factor:
- (L × W × H) ÷ 6,000 = Volumetric Weight (kg)
- Sea Freight (LCL): (L × W × H) ÷ 1,000 = Volumetric Weight (kg)
- Road Freight: (L × W × H) ÷ 3,000 = Volumetric Weight (kg)
Step 2: Compare with Actual Weight
Weigh your package including all packaging materials. This is your gross weight or actual weight.
Step 3: Determine Chargeable Weight
The carrier charges based on whichever is greater—the volumetric weight or the actual weight. Light, bulky items (clothing, foam products) typically incur volumetric charges, while dense items (machinery, metals) are charged by actual weight.
Why DIM Factors Differ by Transport Mode
Air freight uses a higher DIM factor (6,000) because aircraft have strict weight limits. Sea freight uses a lower factor (1,000) because ships have more cargo space relative to weight capacity. If you're comparing costs between shipping methods, use our air cargo cost estimator or ocean freight rate calculator for mode-specific calculations.
Important: Always measure the maximum dimensions of your package, including any protrusions, handles, or irregular shapes. Carriers measure the smallest rectangular box that would contain your cargo.
Example 1: E-commerce Electronics Shipment (Dubai to Germany)
Scenario: Sarah runs an electronics trading company in DIFC and needs to ship 5 boxes of mobile phone accessories to a distributor in Munich via air freight.
Package Details:
- Number of packages: 5
- Dimensions per box: 40 cm × 30 cm × 25 cm
- Actual weight per box: 8 kg
- Total actual weight: 40 kg
Calculation:
Volumetric weight per box = (40 × 30 × 25) ÷ 6,000 = 5 kg
Total volumetric weight = 5 kg × 5 boxes = 25 kg
Chargeable weight = Greater of 40 kg (actual) vs 25 kg (volumetric) = 40 kg
Result: Sarah pays based on the actual weight (40 kg) since her electronics are dense. At approximately AED 18-22/kg for air freight to Europe, her estimated freight cost would be AED 720-880 plus surcharges.
Example 2: Furniture Import via Sea (China to Jebel Ali)
Scenario: Ahmed operates a furniture showroom in Sharjah and imports flat-pack office chairs from Guangzhou using LCL (Less than Container Load) sea freight.
Package Details:
- Number of packages: 20
- Dimensions per package: 80 cm × 60 cm × 40 cm
- Actual weight per package: 15 kg
- Total actual weight: 300 kg
Calculation:
Volume per package = (80 × 60 × 40) ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.192 CBM
Total volume = 0.192 × 20 = 3.84 CBM
Volumetric weight (LCL) = (80 × 60 × 40) ÷ 1,000 × 20 = 3,840 kg
Chargeable weight = Greater of 300 kg vs 3,840 kg = 3,840 kg (or 3.84 CBM)
Result: Ahmed's furniture is bulky but light, so he pays based on volume. At approximately AED 65-85/CBM for LCL from China to UAE, his estimated sea freight cost would be AED 250-326 plus port charges and customs clearance. For a detailed breakdown, try our container load calculator.
Example 3: Industrial Parts via Road (Ras Al Khaimah to Riyadh)
Scenario: A manufacturing company in RAK Industrial Zone ships machine components to Saudi Arabia by road freight.
Package Details:
- Palletized shipment: 2 pallets
- Dimensions per pallet: 120 cm × 100 cm × 90 cm
- Actual weight per pallet: 450 kg
- Total actual weight: 900 kg
Calculation:
Volumetric weight per pallet = (120 × 100 × 90) ÷ 3,000 = 360 kg
Total volumetric weight = 360 × 2 = 720 kg
Chargeable weight = Greater of 900 kg vs 720 kg = 900 kg
Result: The heavy machinery parts are charged by actual weight. Cross-border road freight to Saudi Arabia typically costs AED 0.80-1.20/kg, putting the estimated cost at AED 720-1,080 for the main haul.
UAE Customs and Regulatory Considerations
Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) oversees customs procedures for shipments entering the UAE. Standard import duty is 5% on most goods, with exemptions for items entering Free Trade Zones like JAFZA, Dubai South, or Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD).
Required documentation for commercial shipments includes:
- Commercial invoice with accurate HS codes
- Bill of Lading (sea) or Air Waybill (air)
- Packing list with dimensions and weights
- Certificate of Origin (for preferential duty rates)
For accurate duty estimates on your imports, use our UAE customs duty calculator.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Underestimating dimensions: Always round up to the nearest centimeter. Carriers may remeasure and charge differences.
- Ignoring packaging weight: Include pallets, crates, and protective materials in your actual weight calculation.
- Wrong DIM factor: Using air freight DIM factors for sea shipments will significantly underestimate costs.
- Forgetting surcharges: Fuel surcharges (BAF), peak season fees, and terminal handling charges add 15-30% to base rates.
Expert Tips for Reducing Freight Costs
Optimize packaging: Reduce empty space in boxes to lower volumetric weight. Vacuum packaging for textiles can cut dimensional weight by 40-60%.
Consolidate shipments: Combining multiple orders into one shipment often qualifies for better rates than individual parcels. For express parcel comparison, check out Aramex rate estimates or UPS shipping costs.
Choose the right mode: Air freight suits urgent, high-value, low-volume goods. Sea freight works best for bulk, non-urgent cargo where transit time of 15-30 days is acceptable.
