How UAE car finance is priced

Two numbers decide your instalment: how much you actually borrow, and whether the rate you were quoted is a flat rate or a reducing rate. Dealers frequently quote flat rates because the number sounds lower, but a 3% flat rate is roughly equivalent to a 5.5% reducing rate over five years. Always ask which one you are being shown.

The Central Bank generally requires a minimum 20% down payment on vehicle finance for residents, and terms are capped at five years. A longer term lowers your monthly figure but increases what you pay in total, sometimes substantially.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum down payment for a car loan in the UAE?

Most banks require at least 20% of the vehicle value, in line with UAE Central Bank guidance. Some promotional offers reduce this, but the loan term or rate is usually less favourable in exchange.

What is the maximum car loan term in the UAE?

Five years for most residents. Longer terms lower the monthly instalment but increase total interest paid.

Is a flat rate the same as a reducing rate?

No, and the difference is large. A flat rate charges interest on the original loan amount for the whole term. A reducing rate charges only on the outstanding balance. A 3% flat rate is roughly equivalent to a 5.5% reducing rate over five years.

Can I settle my car loan early in the UAE?

Yes. Early settlement fees are generally capped at 1% of the outstanding balance or AED 10,000, whichever is lower.
