What Is a Cumulative GPA Calculator?

A cumulative GPA calculator computes your overall grade point average by combining grades from every semester you've completed. Unlike a single semester grade tracker, this tool weighs each course by its credit hours and calculates your total academic standing.

Key benefits of using this calculator:

This calculator follows the standard weighted average formula used by universities worldwide, including institutions in the UAE such as American University of Sharjah, University of Dubai, and Zayed University. Your academic future depends on accurate numbers—get them here at Online Calculator UAE.

How the Cumulative GPA Calculation Works

Your cumulative GPA uses a weighted average formula. Each grade carries different weight based on the course's credit hours. A 4-credit course impacts your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course.

The Formula

The calculation follows this process:

Cumulative GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Where Quality Points for each course = Grade Points × Credit Hours

Step-by-Step Breakdown

  1. Convert letter grades to grade points: Using the standard 4.0 scale, an A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0
  2. Calculate quality points per course: Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours
  3. Sum all quality points: Add together quality points from every course across all semesters
  4. Sum all credit hours: Add the total credit hours attempted
  5. Divide: Total quality points divided by total credit hours equals your cumulative GPA

Example 1: Business Student at University of Dubai

Fatima is completing her second year in Business Administration. She wants to calculate her cumulative GPA from her first three semesters.

Semester 1 (15 credits):

Semester 2 (15 credits):

Semester 3 (12 credits):

Calculation:

Semester 1 Quality Points: (3×3.3) + (3×4.0) + (3×3.7) + (3×3.0) + (3×4.0) = 9.9 + 12 + 11.1 + 9 + 12 = 54.0

Semester 2 Quality Points: (3×3.3) + (3×3.0) + (3×4.0) + (3×2.3) + (3×3.7) = 9.9 + 9 + 12 + 6.9 + 11.1 = 48.9

Semester 3 Quality Points: (3×4.0) + (3×3.3) + (3×3.7) + (3×3.3) = 12 + 9.9 + 11.1 + 9.9 = 42.9

Total Quality Points: 54.0 + 48.9 + 42.9 = 145.8

Total Credit Hours: 15 + 15 + 12 = 42

Cumulative GPA: 145.8 ÷ 42 = 3.47

Fatima's cumulative GPA of 3.47 places her on the Dean's List at most institutions.

Example 2: Engineering Student Tracking Progress

Ahmed studies Mechanical Engineering in Abu Dhabi. After four semesters, he wants to check if he qualifies for an internship requiring a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Previous semesters summary:

Semester 4 (16 credits):

Calculation:

Semester 4 Quality Points: (4×3.3) + (3×3.7) + (4×3.0) + (2×4.0) + (3×3.3) = 13.2 + 11.1 + 12 + 8 + 9.9 = 54.2

Total Quality Points: 135.0 + 54.2 = 189.2

Total Credit Hours: 45 + 16 = 61

Cumulative GPA: 189.2 ÷ 61 = 3.10

Ahmed's GPA of 3.10 qualifies him for the internship program.

Example 3: Recovering from a Difficult Semester

Sara had a challenging first semester but improved significantly. She wants to see how much her GPA has recovered.

Semester 1 (12 credits):

Semester 2 (15 credits):

Calculation:

Semester 1 Quality Points: (4×1.0) + (4×2.0) + (3×2.3) + (1×3.0) = 4 + 8 + 6.9 + 3 = 21.9

Semester 2 Quality Points: (4×3.3) + (4×3.0) + (4×3.7) + (3×4.0) = 13.2 + 12 + 14.8 + 12 = 52.0

Note: At some universities, retaking a course replaces the original grade in GPA calculations. Check your institution's policy. If Sara's university uses grade replacement, her Semester 1 Chemistry D would be excluded.

Without grade replacement:

Total Quality Points: 21.9 + 52.0 = 73.9

Total Credit Hours: 12 + 15 = 27

Cumulative GPA: 73.9 ÷ 27 = 2.74

Sara's hard work raised her cumulative GPA from 1.83 (first semester) to 2.74—nearly a full point increase.

Understanding GPA Scales

Different institutions use different grading scales. The  is standard in North American universities and many international institutions. Some UAE universities use a  where A+ = 5.0. Always verify which scale your institution uses before calculating. You can use our CGPA to percentage converter to translate between systems.

Transfer Credits and GPA

Transfer credits often complicate GPA calculations. Most universities accept transfer credits but don't include them in your GPA calculation at the new institution. Your cumulative GPA typically reflects only courses taken at your current university. Previous coursework appears as transfer credit without affecting your local GPA.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA reflects only the grades from one academic term. Cumulative GPA combines all semesters you've completed, providing your overall academic standing. For single-term calculations, use our individual term grade calculator.

How accurate is this cumulative GPA calculator?

This calculator uses the standard weighted average formula employed by universities worldwide. Results match official calculations when you input correct grades and credit hours. Always verify your final GPA with your registrar's office for official documents.

Can I calculate my GPA if my university uses a different scale?

Yes. This calculator supports 4.0, 5.0, and custom grading scales. Select your scale before entering grades, or convert your grades to the appropriate point values manually. Our grade point tool can help with conversions.

Do failed courses count toward my cumulative GPA?

Yes, failed courses (F grades = 0.0 points) factor into your cumulative GPA calculation. The credit hours attempted are included in your total, which significantly impacts your average. Retaking courses may help if your school offers grade replacement.

How can I raise my cumulative GPA quickly?

Focus on higher-credit courses where you can realistically earn A grades. Each high-credit course has greater impact on your overall GPA. Also consider retaking courses where you received poor grades if your institution replaces the original grade.

Does this calculator work for high school students?

Yes, the weighted average formula applies to high school GPA calculations. However, high schools may use different point systems or weight honors/AP courses differently. For specific high school calculations, try our secondary school grade calculator.

Are withdrawal grades included in cumulative GPA?

Typically, W (withdrawal) grades don't affect your GPA because they carry no grade points. However, too many withdrawals may affect academic standing or financial aid. Check your institution's specific policies regarding course withdrawals.

How do I calculate my GPA if I've only completed one semester?

After one semester, your cumulative GPA equals your semester GPA. Simply enter your courses, grades, and credit hours for that term. The calculation method remains identical—total quality points divided by total credit hours.
